Google’s New google.com/goto URL Redirects: What SEOs and Website Owners Need to Know

If you’ve recently checked Google Search or hovered over an organic search result, you may have noticed something unusual: the link no longer appears to point directly to the destination website.

Instead, some Google Search results now use a URL that looks similar to:

google.com/goto?url=[encoded value]

When clicked, the Google URL acts as an intermediate redirect before sending the visitor to the actual webpage.

This isn’t a change to your website’s URLs, canonical tags, or redirect setup. Google confirmed on August 26, 2026, that it is rolling out these redirects as part of its broader efforts to deploy technical measures against evolving forms of abuse and protect its services and users.

For everyday searchers, the difference is almost invisible. For SEOs, rank-tracking platforms, SERP data providers, and teams that monitor search results programmatically, however, the change could be much more significant.

Here’s what we know so far—and what website owners should do about it.

What Is the google.com/goto URL Redirect?

Google has started routing some links in its Search results through a Google-owned google.com/goto URL before sending users to the final destination.

Previously, the journey generally looked like this:

Google Search → Website

With the new routing, it looks like:

Google Search → google.com/goto → Website

The destination page itself hasn’t changed. Google is simply inserting an additional routing layer between the search result and the website.

The url parameter can contain an encoded or otherwise opaque value rather than exposing the destination URL in a straightforward format. That means systems that previously extracted destination URLs directly from Search-result HTML may now need to resolve the redirect to determine the final URL. 

For a normal user, this happens quickly and is generally invisible.

For a program collecting thousands of search results, however, an additional redirect step can make the process more complicated.

When Did Google Start Using It?

The behavior was first spotted during testing in June and July 2026. Reports became more widespread in August, and Google publicly confirmed the rollout on August 26.

DemandSphere reported seeing the new URLs at close to full rollout across several residential IP providers. However, the behavior can still vary depending on the search environment, including factors such as whether a user is logged in or browsing in incognito mode. 

So it is better to think of this as a broad rollout with some environment-dependent variation, rather than assuming that every Google Search result in every location uses google.com/goto.

Why Is Google Introducing the google.com/goto Redirect?

This is one area where it’s important to separate what Google has confirmed from what the SEO industry is interpreting.

Google’s public explanation is limited. A Google spokesperson said:

“We have a long history of deploying technical measures against evolving forms of abuse, and we regularly take steps to protect our services and users.” 

Google has not specifically said that the change was introduced to target:

• SEO rank trackers
• SERP scraping
• AI crawlers
• SERP APIs
• Competitive intelligence platforms

However, the technical effect is relevant to those systems.

When a search result contains the actual destination URL, automated systems can potentially extract that URL directly from the Search-result HTML. So, Is This an Anti-Scraping Update?

Possibly—but Google hasn’t explicitly confirmed that.

For accuracy, though, it’s better to describe anti-scraping as an industry interpretation, not Google’s officially stated reason.

What Does This Mean for Website Owners?

For most website owners, the immediate answer is simple:

You don’t need to change your website because of the google.com/goto rollout.

Does google.com/goto Affect SEO Rankings?

There is currently no evidence that google.com/goto itself is a ranking factor or ranking update.

The important distinction is between the ranking process and the click-routing process.

Conceptually, the journey is:

Ranking → Search Result → Click → Redirect → Website

The new change concerns the click and routing stage, not evidence of a change to how Google determines which pages rank.

So there is currently no reason to respond to this update by:

• Changing canonical tags
• Rebuilding your URL structure
• Removing existing redirects
• Changing your internal linking
• Rewriting pages
• Assuming you’ve received a ranking penalty

Search Console vs. Analytics

Compare GSC clicks with GA4 organic sessions instead of assuming that attribution has changed.

Organic Traffic

Monitor organic sessions, landing pages, conversions, and revenue for genuine changes.

How Can You Check If google.com/goto Is Live?

If you want to see whether your current Google Search environment is using the new routing system, you can perform a simple test.

1. Open Google Search in an incognito/private browser window.

5. If available, inspect the link or page source to see whether the result uses a google.com/goto URL.

The Bottom Line
